The Himalayas in India's northeast is where organic farming in India has taken root. Organic farming in happening in the fertile foothills of the Himalayas and riverbeds of the Indus, Sutlej, Kali, Kosi and Brahmaputra. Activist Vandana Shiva, who is famous for opposing GMOs in India and promoting organic agriculture and seed saving, has a center there. Large food companies, notably Sanjeevani, is located there.
The Himalayan region in India includes the provinces of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, as well as the hill regions of two states, Assam and West Bengal.
