Juice ice cubes is the star ingredient in one of my absolute favorite (and easiest) summer drinks that hit the sweet spot every time!
It's as easy to prepare as making ice cubes, and you get to enjoy that hint of natural sweetness, a little burst of cool from the cubes, and exciting fruit flavor in your water.

This isn't ice water
If you follow Buttered Veg, you'll know that I'm an Ayurveda nutritionist and digestive health counselor, and if you know about Ayurveda, then you'll know I would never advise drinking ice water.
Too much ice in your water will kill your digestive fire, and since your body requires a warm internal temperature to function optimally, drinking ice water will actually generate more heat, since you're body needs to produce heat to warm up that ice water.

So when enjoying juice ice cubes, you want to use just 2-3 juice cubes to an entire glass, or around 12 ounces, of filtered water.
This will make your water a little cooler, but it won't be ice cold.
This way your palate will feel refreshed, but not frozen.
Health benefits
Juice cubes add electrolytes to your water, which supports muscle, nerves, and bone health. I wrote a lot about the importance of electrolytes here, and below is a beautiful graphic we made to illustrate the benefits.
An electrolyte-rich drink feels more refreshing after sweating on a hot day.
That small amount of natural sugar from the fruit has a cooling effect on the body, and a soothing effect on the nervous system.

Which juice to use
When selecting a juice to freeze in your ice cube trays, opt for the highest quality juice you can find, and avoid added or artificial sugars.

My favorite electrolyte-rich juices
- Apricot juice (potassium)
- Pomegranate juice (potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium)
- Mango juice (potassium, phosphorus, magnesium, calcium)
- Cherry or tart cherry juice (potassium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, and melatonin)
