Introducing Myself
My name is Andrea Hayley-Sankaran, a vegetarian chef with expertise in balanced cooking and flavor creation.
I am a nature-lover from Western Canada who now lives just north of the Big Apple—that’s New York City of course.
I love the energy of this part of the world, along with my peaceful home and backyard garden surrounded by huge trees.
New York is where I fell in love with my beautiful South Indian husband, who unwittingly rekindled my passion for cooking by taking me to visit his family in India.
Did you know that people spend more time cooking in India than in any other country in the world?
There is so much love in my Indian mother’s cooking, and everything is cooked from scratch, using locally obtained whole foods.
It is the same culture that I observed on a trip to Central America in my early 20s that inspired my cooking career in the first place. There is something about simplicity in food that profoundly moves me.
Healing Whole Foods
I believe that our food is a gift from the divine that is intended for our nourishment, and to support our flourishing.
Unfortunately, our modern culture has twisted nature’s gifts into something manufactured, convenience-based, and processed—and it is making us sick.
There is much evidence that the recent proliferation of chronic diseases, as well as untold personal suffering on a daily basis, is related to our food choices.
You may even be aware that our how we eat also impacts our emotions and how we think.
According to traditional wisdom, certain foods can lead to feelings of depression and inertia, or giddiness and anxiety. Any range of emotions can be triggered by food.
My approach to food is very holistic.
It takes into account how the food will impact both mind and body. It considers the seasons, the source of the ingredients, and how ingredients are prepared, cooked, and presented.
The simple act of cooking can be tremendously healing. It can even transform your life as it did mine.
Why I Started Buttered Veg
I used to get so frustrated by the lack of quality food in North America.
Over time, I noticed that one of the biggest contributors to this problem was a lack of traditional knowledge about healthy food.
I started Buttered Veg to be a resource and guide to help you to discover how to cook food that satisfies you, and nourishes you from the inside out.

How I Can Help You
I will always encourage you to follow your own intuition, and to practice self love and self respect toward your food choices.
I believe that each of us has the inner knowledge to discover our own optimal health.
With greater awareness about food and lifestyle, you will be empowered to make the best choices that work for you.
Below is a little manifesto on our approach to food here at Buttered Veg that I hope you find positive and inspiring.
